Asian American Mental Health
Program of Research
Asian Americans are racialized as "other," simultaneously a devalued other and an idealized other. My past research has found that rejecting internalized racism can prevent detrimental effects on the relation between racism-related stress and mental health. However, rejection of racism requires recognition of it. Seemingly positive, yet divisive and misleading, stereotypes associated with the model minority myth can make anti-Asian American racism difficult to be perceived.
Therefore, my current research is focused on increasing racial consciousness. I am interested in understanding Asian Americans' perceptions of racism and how motivation to challenge racism may be transmitted across generations.
